"UNDER THE BRIDGE"
east chinatown is quite different from the more
crowded section west of lafayette street. in
particular, near the manhattan bridge and its
surrounding areas, there is a greater
concentration of asians residing there, and less
of the popular attractions most outsiders seek.
for me, this eastern part is vastly more
interesting, dynamic, insular and authentic.
missing are the street vendors with bootlegged
dvd's and designer bags, or the bargain-hunters
and tourists crowding the streets along the west
side of canal street. here on the east side, one
also finds a relatively closed-off community with
few non-asians. because of this, there is a
tangible yet different energy in this section of
chinatown that is appealing to me.
i have become fascinated by how dusk light can
isolate and almost mystically frame individuals
on streets that are otherwise crowded and
congested. what i try to capture are simple
moments amid the chaos of the streets. by
concentrating on individuals with up-close and
candid street portraits, i can break down the
cacophony of the streets to its barest elements to
represent the locals who, though at home, seem
out of place.
ARTIST STATEMENT
in my limited experience as a photographer, i
have come to define photography in non-
philosophical terms. simply put, i try to capture
what excites, attracts and resonates with me on a
personal and aesthetic level. additionally, my
other attraction to photography is the element of
discovery: experimenting with camera settings to
control light has allowed me to find within daily
street life, unusual and often surprising forms
that the naked eye can miss.
BIO
after playing guitar in various rock and hip-hop
projects, and composing for live theater in the
new york metropolitan area, in 2007 chris
beauchamp took time off from that creative outlet
only to stumble upon a previously unrealized
passion for photography while taking an intro
course to photography. immediately hooked, he
became primarily attracted to the challenges of
street photography. though living in nyc has given
him ample opportunities to explore this new
passion, the greater part of his energy has been
focused in chinatown.

“THE PINK ENVELOPE PROJECT”
"the pink envelope project” is a personal study
on how packaging affects pricing and the artist.
when presented effectively, something
unappealing can suddenly become very
desirable, or if put in the wrong hand, the reverse
is achieved. for the artists who do want the type
of recognition that will permit them to live off their
art, yet not be linearly associated with any one
particular style, a compromise between their
integrity vs. the decision makers’ picture of which
art is “digestible” or “marketable” to collectors
must be attained.
through the billions of dollars placed in
marketing, big corporations have become
experts on behavioral strategy. results from their
research offer their advertisers an exclusive on
how the human mind operates. perceptive to
people’s ways of validating an act, these
companies exploit their knowledge by cleverly
gold-plating insignificant objects for the public to
willingly consume.
well aware of this tactic, and being privy to the
same marketing information, establishments
who promote the arts are prone to turn the artist
into a sale able commodity that can easily be
defined by the work they produce. though this
may be financially beneficial to the marketer and
collector, it can constrain the creative process of
the artist and give off a monotonous appearance
to their work.
was drawn to the unintentionally painterly
strokes, brilliant palates and rich textures found
on walls throughout oaxaca, florence, and new
york city. though unintended, there is a feeling of
spontaneity, excitement, and visual appeal in
them that artists often strive to recreate. these
walls are accidental works of art. myriad other

"PROJECT SOCIAL..."
random aggregation sharing a common
moment in time or friends and family with a
closer cohesion – express their relationships
and through their interactions with each other,
convey their values, social backgrounds and
interests. these interactions are expressed
silently in photographs through body movement,
facial expression and the eyes.
whether it is a meal in cape cod, a crowded
street corner on east 116th street or st. marks at
night – these small social groups and their
interaction fascinate me.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Logical structures, details as well as
imagination and symbols all reflect my
photographic interests. Whether shooting street
scenes, portraits or buildings - photographs
time stamp a reality – forever preserving it.
BIO
exposed to public art at an early age as a graffiti
artist. roaming the streets of nyc during the early
70’s. a city in decline filled with crime and
corruption. rebellion was expressed on the
subway, which reflected the chaos of the times.
with no formal training in art my graffiti focused
on large colorful works splashed all over the
subway system. mass production, fast and with
little technique describe my early works. with a
business -like work ethic i quickly became the
king of the broadway line – irt no. 1 train – not
because of my artistic talents – but mainly
because of the quantity of my work. my training
as a cpa forces me to see a quantitative
description of reality. my right and left-brain
training is reflected in my photography.

"PHOTOGRAPHIC TRIGGER GAMES"
music can create a demarcation of experience
into fixed-state patterns. these ordered states,
created through meditation-inducing sequences
of rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and
discordance, can in turn generate new and
unique emotions and understandings when
combined with the unique mind of the listener.
when joined with the aesthetic stimuli of
photography, music can alter the connection
between the photographer and the viewer,
creating multiple experiences of the same
photograph as different musical sequences
play. working with the photographers of project
2011, it is my goal to construct an environment
where photographs can be experienced through
varied musical prisms, enabling the viewer to
have multiple experiences of the same piece,
which in turn fuse into a gestalt memory and
understanding of the photographers' work.
BIO
phrase, aka dan loew, is a composer and
producer of original music and poetry. he has
composed soundtracks for three short films,
one of which was submitted to the sxsw film
festival in 2001. his poetry was published in the
austin international poetry festival anthology
"diverse city" in 2000, after extensive
performances and showcases in the austin
poetry scene. after developing a career in
quantitative social science, he is returning to
music by creating an audio installation to
complement the photographs of project 2011,
and plans on a variety of hip hop, electronica,
and soundtrack releases.
In this page, below each photographer's work
are a samples of my compositions.
stumped by the homogeneous notion of
“signature”, this exercise inspired me to find
ways to join unlikely themes together.
therefore, with nothing more than to have a
clean minimalist look, i chose a descriptive title
and the color pink as the theme for this project.
ARTIST STATEMENT
i strongly believe that with art you can capture a
person's interest and peak their curiosity of
different cultures, races and beliefs to break
down the barriers created by our news media. it
is hard for me to take a classic picture because i
have no intention of repeating what i've seen or
love, so i turn to deconstruction. for instance,
rearranging an image so that it is slightly off, or
looking for blurry or "bad" images to give them a
picturesque quality, or idealizing the mundane...
things of that nature are what i’m trying to
capture.

"TILT SHIFT: MINIATURE FAKING"
Tilt-Shift miniature faking is a creative technique
whereby a photograph of a life-size location or
object is manipulated to give an optical illusion
of a photograph of a miniature scale model.
Altering the focus of the photography in
Photoshop (or similar program) simulates the
shallow depth of field normally encountered with
macro lenses making the scene seem much
smaller than it actually is.
In addition to focus manipulation, the tilt-shift
photography effect is improved by increasing
color saturation and contrast, to simulate the
bright paint often found on scale models.
Most faked tilt-shift photographs are taken from
a high angle to further simulate the effect of
looking down on a miniature. The technique is
particularly effective on buildings, cars, trains
and people.
BIO
Julio A. Gonzalez was born in the Dominican
Republic and lives in New York City. He
attended Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)

work is informed by early twentieth century
aesthetics and shares formal concerns with
classical photography. His aim is to bring
calmness and stillness into his pictures. He
has shown his work in both conventional and
alternative spaces, at galleries, and at art fairs
throughout New York City and the United States.

"ON THE WALLS"
the commotion of modernity makes it easy to
miss the beauty that can be found in unexpected
places. in the series on the walls, i slowed
down enough to be able to see the fine art that
“naturally” exists as a result of the grime, decay,
and grunge of cities around the world
